A Different Look

Today was a fun day…

Today was a fun day to try something  different. All conditions were set to get a lil more creative and look for new angles to shoot Playa Zicatela. I was stoked with the results, because i personally didnt think i’d like any of the shots. When i came home i was a lil surprised and happy how it turned out.

South West Swell: The Recap

Nogales, Moncada, Ramirez, Monreal, Lamb, Long, Sterling, Dunfee and many more charging in Puerto!

On june 6th a massive south west swell hit Playa Zicatela with 10-15 foot bombs detonating far bar. The local boys were frothing while a crew of big wave riders from California made the trip to test themselves. Unfortunately, this particular swell was very hard to predict what it was gonna do. We had a lack of offshore winds during the 2 biggest morning but, that didn’t stop the boys from charging.

Here’s some images from the last few days.

Oscar Moncada = 10 Perfecto!!

The Monsters: Kohl, Greg, Gabriel, Will, Coco, Oscar, Alvaro…

One for the History Books

On August 16th 2012, Puerto Escondido saw a Mutant (15-20 foot) swell and a crew of crazy committed big wave riders. Greg Long, Kohl Christensen, Gabriel Villaran, Coco nogales, Oscar Moncada, Alvaro Malpartida, Will Dillon, Spencer Pirdy, Jensen Hasset and many more grab the biggest buts the could find and surfed one of the most amazing swell we have ever seen in Puerto Escondido. this one for sure will go straight to the top 5 session in Puerto Escondido’s Surf History Books.

Monster Ride: Kohl Christensen took off on maybe one of the biggest, wildest, craziest waves ever ridden in Puerto. It was a solid 15-18 foot bomb that had crazy bumps due to the strong south east winds. Had he made the whole ride, it would have been a strong contender to take the wave of the summer event. Unfortunately, after negotiating 2 major bumps, Kohl got lunched into the air by a weird third wind chop. He was unable to penetrate and almost did a scorpion on the face of the wave and then got pounded by a violent massive Puerto lip. On top of that, he got smashed by the next 3 monster waves that were coming behind.

Greg Long: One of the biggest lefts came straight to Greg Longs’ position and as we all know he was not gonna pull back. He wishes he was a lil bit deeper but, its actually very had to have the perfect position when we talk about an 18 foot wave.

Biggest Barrel: Oscar Moncada waited all day for the conditions to improve but, when the southeast winds kicked in, he realized is was time to grab the rope and get towed into the biggest bombs of the day. Most of the biggest waves were unridden until that point. He actually got towed into 3 waves where he found a 10 foot barrel on the first one, a massive drop to bottom turn on the second and the Biggest barrel ridden on the third attempt. That was good enough to call it a day.

Cleanest Tube: Gabriel Villaran was the one who looked unstoppable. He was always lucky to be in the spot for most of the sent and took a lot of good rides but, the best one came to him late on the day giving him a pretty good entry for the wave of the summer event.

Check out the images to realize how crazy that session was!

BEST TUBE: OSCAR MONCADA

Oscar scores…

The longest barrel of the season so far was taken yesterday by local surfer Oscar Moncada. The sequence only shows the first two long sections he had to go through. He gets lost in the spit and comes out way dow the line (not shown).

It was by far the best day i have seen in may years. Solid 8 foot hawaiian A-frames with some inconsistent 10 footers were detonating zicatela’s sandbar. Unfortunately the swell did not last very ong and this morning was only 4 foot on the sets.

Check it out!

Sequence of the Trip: Oscar Moncada

Oscar Moncada takes a long ride!

With epic waves its easy to get a good ride, but in this case, Oscar took the longest deepest barrel from our recent surf trip… check it out and see how crazy deep the first section was.

Dane Reynolds and Oscar Moncada Score!

South Swell Madness

Non stop south swells have been slamming into Mainland Mexico’s best breaks. From Puerto and all the way south, it has been epic and it only looks like we will be getting more.

ASP Superstar, Dane Reynolds, came straight to Mexico from the event at Lowers and he was loving the free surf sessions in crowdless waves. He was filming a section for Kai Neville’s new movie and he was joined by another star, Craig Anderson. Together, they were tearing appart every section they found and they made sure there was not a single wave unridden.

Oscar Moncada also made the trip south from Puerto Escondido and some of the locals were at a different location having a blast during the morning session.

Check out the shots of our recent trip to heaven!

March 10th Gallery

Smaller Swell…

March 10th was not as big as yesterday, but waves were a bit more clean and perfect. Although the current was still there to make things harder, there were some pristine moments.

Here’s a gallery of todays action. New swell coming in a couple of days.

Stay tuned…

Coco Nogales, Mexpipe Master!

12 Foot Solid Mexpipe Bombs!

It was not as big as we all would have wanted it, but there were some pretty heavy meaty bombs this morning. The best ride was taken by our fellow Mexican big wave rider Coco Nogales. IT was a heavy 15 foot bomb. He drew a perfect line looking for a solid bottom turn and pulled in backside showing the mad skills by not grabbing the rail and getting blown out by a massive spit.

Also Oscar Moncada was out there taking off on some bombs and he was able to catch a couple of solid ones and the heaviest righthander of the morning. Will Dillon and Andres Di Marco were the paddle standouts of the morning catching waves with the tow riders and showing how its done.

Check out some of the action photos of today and stay tuned for more as the swell keeps pumping!

Oscar Moncada, The Champ!

Moncada Wins CN Tube Ride Comp 2011

It was an exciting final! The last heat was postponed due to a crazy storm that showed up right before the heat started. All surfers tried to paddle out, some made it some didn’t. The organization saw the conditions turning really bad and decided to cancel the heat and run it during the last couple of hours of daylight in hope for some offshore winds and better tube riding conditions.

We all got back to the beach at 5pm, surfers, media and spectators. SSE winds were strong to give the rights a better shape. It was still solid surf, between 10 to 12 foot solid Puerto Surf.

It was all ready for the final and all surfers were pumped on the conditions. The all went out and it was on!  Chris Jensen threw the first punch buy getting a nice 6 foot right-hander with a great shape finding the shade in the hot sun of Puerto. With score he was immediately in first place. But it was a long 50 min. final and he ended up placing 3rd.

David Rutherford had a great run during the first day scoring a perfect 10, but felt short during the final. He didnt find a good wave during the whole heat, taking 6th place. Andres DiMarco, the underdog, got a lil barrel and got enough points to get a 5th place. Brazilian charger Felipe ‘Gordo’ Cesarano got a couple of good rides scoring a 4th place.

It was all about Rusty Long during the final, he was leading the during most of the heat until the man of the day, Oscar Moncada, found the most crazy 12 foot right-hander, pulling in backdoor style and making the barrel followed by aonther great long section. Two judged gave him a 10 and the last one gave him a 9.5 earning the highest score of the heat and taking the crown of the “Coco Nogales” Tube Ride Contest 2011

” I wasn’t thinking about winning. All i wanted to do is get a couple of insane tubes and in the end, i got the sickest wave of the heat. Im happy i won”                                 – Oscar Moncada
